Pinus thunbergii, also called black pine, Japanese black pine, and Japanese pine, is a pine tree native to coastal areas of Japan and South Korea. It is called gomsol in Korean, hēisōng in Chinese, and kuromatsu in Japanese. It is noted for its whitish terminal buds that provide interesting contrast with its dark green foliage. In cultivation, it is more often seen in the 20-60 feet tall range. Needles (to 4.5 inch long) in bundles of two are an attractive dark green. Young foliage candles are upright.
