Narcissus Villa - The Echo of the Soul

Concept : In a remote location, a villa has been built as a tribute to the Narcissus myth. By the bank of a river, a statue of Narcissus endlessly contemplates its own reflection, while surrounded by the echo of the mountains around. This project has for purpose to be an art piece, lost in the wilderness and remote, that visitors have to go on a hike through the mountains and the river to discover, almost living themselves the journey of Narcissus.

It is also an allegory regarding the pursuit of artistic beauty and perfection, which as artist we can spend our lives running after without ever being satisfied, just as Narcissus who has fallen with a reflection of his own self that he will never be able to reach.
It's an endless pursuit of the elusive beauty that, in order to find, we have to walk next to the river of hardship, trying to picture the poetry of what echoes in the soul.

Thus, I wanted the final image to convey a sense of melancholy. To achieve this, I've set my mind on creating a moody visual, with an almost monochromatic blue tone.

To help me envision the visuals, I started by writing a text that would guide me through my artistic vision :

Like Narcissus longing for unreachable perfection
Art reflects its elusive beauty in a river of blue
Drowning in the longing, watching leaves fall and wither
In the echo of our aspirations, finding the essence of truth
In the tears of the soul, lives eternal creation

Software and equipment used

3DS Max, Corona Renderer, Adobe Photoshop

The final visual. It went through many iterations, but it now conveys all the story elements I've been wanting to express with this piece.

Narcissus villa - A place for reflection and contemplation

Like Narcissus longing for unreachable perfection
Art reflects its elusive beauty in a river of blue
Drowning in the longing, watching leaves fall and wither
In the echo of our aspirations, finding the essence of truth
In the tears of the soul, lives eternal creation

A few more takes, where I felt more confident with the balance of architecture / surrounding environment. As the Narcissus statue is still the main focus element, it's now clear that the nature surrounds it.

A few of my initial images. At this stage, I took a look back and felt that I was focusing too much on the architecture, and not enough on the surrounding nature.

Although I was happy with the overall mood and feel of these initial visuals, I've set my goal for the next step to focus more on the landscape around the villa.

A few render passes. I did an extensive research and tried many different cameras and views, in order to explore different takes.

My main intent when working on my composition :
I wanted the statue of Narcissus and the piece of Architecture to feel lost, surrounded in Nature.

I used 3Ds Max and Corona Renderer for my 3D work.

I was mainly inspired by old painters, such as Hudson River school painters, or the masters of Romanticism such as Caspar David Friedrich. They do not only picture nature beautifully, but also give the visual a sense of deep emotion.

I also found inspiration in more recent, digital-era paintings, such as the house lost in the surrounding fog.

Moodiness, Melancholy, Ethereal.
