Notholithocarpus densiflorus, commonly known as the tanoak, Lithocarpus densiflorus syn or tanbark-oak, is a broadleaf tree in the family Fagaceae, native to the western United States, in California as far south as the Transverse Ranges, north to southwest Oregon, and east in the Sierra Nevada. Tanoak trees are not true oaks like white oaks, golden oaks or red oaks. Rather, they are close relatives of the oak, which relationship explains their common name. Tanoak evergreen trees belong to the beech family, but they are considered an evolutionary link between oaks and chestnuts.
