First place

"Homesick" by Stefano Mondini

Jury commentary

"To me, this image is more of a shared first place than a second place but I had to make a pick. It tells me the story of our tragic future in which we will require technology to experience “nature” and “relaxation”. We will require a battery powered device with screens in front of our eyes to experience comfort, belonging and friendships. The fake world will become our real world, and the real world will diminish as it’s forgotten and abandoned but the species that destroyed it.

The execution of this image is superb. I love the cartoonish style which differs a lot from what I would’ve expected to see. The futuristic neon-like colors that gets me thinking of Blade Runner in a way, which is, like this image, also a very tragic prediction of our future. The composition with a 1-point perspective, the woman sitting on the floor in her empty apartment now filled with artificial, holographic details, and the circular window behind her that beautifully breaks the otherwise straight lines of the image and adds a well needed, and perfectly balanced, compositional detail.

The rain on the window indicates a very dystopian environment which enhances the idea of humanity becoming completely dependent on technology to find some kind of happiness and fulfilment as we’re grasping for the last straws of mental wellbeing. The mushroom in the incubator that also indicates that the only way to keep real nature alive is through controlled, artificial environments. There are so many details in this image and it’s very obvious that the artist spent a lot of thought and emotion into this piece." - Johannes Lindqvist

"An image that at first appears to be a psychedelic explosion of madness, and immediately following, an explosion of meaning as well, prompting us to reflect on the self-imposed constraints versus what we may truly be seeking. It's like a 'bomb' that detonates in two phases. Well done!" - Massimo Gnocchi

Second place

"NOMAD" by Sergey Chaschin

Jury commentary

"To me, these images are simply amazing. The first image is to me a winner in itself, but the complementary images are also fantastic. The story, even if not as relatable to the world around us as some other images, is very relatable to me personally. A nomad is my definition of a free soul and it’s what I’ve always wanted to become. I don't consider home to be a house. Home is not where my bed is. Home is where we find comfort and pleasure in our surroundings.

Being a nomad, experiencing the world and our nature, cherishing its beauty. That’s being home to me, and that’s why these images resembles so much with me.

The technical execusion is splendid. All of the images are incredibly well balanced, the lighting, the composition. Backgrounds and foregrounds. They are extremely comfortable to look at with the clear tones of color, and subtle, cinematic lighting. I also love that the landscape is so vast, but there are plenty of details in the scene, that the additional close up images also show." - Johannes Lindqvist

"What I like about this image is the unusual take to what "home" is. I love how balanced the composition is within the wide landscape format, and the use of the muted colour palette is masterful. Well done!" - Lucia Frascerra

"The image embodies not only a philosophy but also an exceptional technical prowess. The tones, composition, and storyboard are simple yet captivating. They resemble frames from a movie. Well done." - Massimo Gnocchi

Third place

"To my future self" by Thijs De Bruin

Jury commentary

"I chose this artwork just because it fits exactly with my wishes. A calm river, trees, nature, coziness, a small fire." - Curtissheeran

"I really like the use of colour and depth. the atmosphere is very calm and intimate. I can totally see why you would want to make this place your home" - Lucia Frascerra

"A composition that masterfully balances simplicity with harmony, conveying a profound sense of tranquility. From a technical standpoint, its execution is impeccable." - Massimo Gnocchi

Honorable mention

"Homeless Home" by David Lecourbaron

Jury commentary

Honorable mention - Curtissheeran

"A thoughtful image with a style reminiscent of a frame from an animated film." - Massimo Gnocchi

Honorable mention

"A mountain in the home" by Cheng Wei Lee

Jury commentary

Honorable mention - Curtissheeran

Honorable mention

"A real HOME" by Anastasia Mezhennaya

Jury commentary

"I like the concept of this image - the fact that a home is wherever you feel safe and protected from the scary outside world. Atmosphere and composition also are very successful." - Lucia Frascerra

"The image showcases outstanding composition and color utilization, complemented by evident technical proficiency." - Massimo Gnocchi

Honorable mention

"Human Shelter" by Niccolo Brovelli

Jury commentary

"Well done, I think it's always to be appreciated who uses images as a means to convey a message. Light, compsotion and details are very convincing. The only remarks I would have are about the bin in the foreground/right - the material is not as realistic as the rest of the image and tend to be a bit distracting. Also the trashbin with the bonfire is rather small, and makes the scale of the backgrounf a bit confusing. I greatly appreciated the union of dynamism and stillness of the image." - Lisa Della Dora

Honorable mention - Massimo Gnocchi

Honorable mention - Lucia Frascerra

Honorable mention

"The fine line" by Oxana Fedorchuk

Jury commentary

"I think this image has a very worthy place on the podium. What I like with this image is the originality of the concept. It’s not just a house on a field. It's not just some trees. It’s so much deeper and more complex than that.

The back story of this image is very striking and it says a lot about how we act and think as humans. Often very naive, thinking we’ll be automatically safe because we are in the comfort of our home. Our stubbornness and naivety are often self harming, but we either don’t see it or we choose to ignore it. This image is to me about humanity, not about a house.

What I love about this image, which is also an indication of true art and artistry, is that it leaves a lot of room for the viewers own interpretations. This isn’t outspoken by the author but I can also see this image as a statement in the current time we live in, when the, sometimes unavoidable, environmental catastrophes are always around the corner. Everyone wants change, but very few are willing to sacrifice their own sacred lifestyle. Only others are supposed to sacrifice theirs, for the greater good. Everyone else should stop buying new phones and eating meat, but I’d rather continue. What difference does one person make anyway?

Visually this image is masterfully composed, with a deliberate and stark contrast between the green and precious home, and the desaturated, depressing reality surrounding it. The black and green trees work very well together, accompanied by the blue accent on the house that plays well with the skylight. Lighting, colors and general technical execution are all splendid." - Johannes Lindqvist

"The house is depicted as a 'bubble' where one feels safe and comfortable. A beautiful concept. From my perspective, this piece could have been more impactful, especially if placed in a context that created greater contrast." - Massimo Gnocchi

Honorable mention

"Always was, always will be." by Aulivio Hariananda

Jury commentary

"Technically very well exectued, intersting storytelling and composition, very on point compared to the references. Nice details and technique, the only thing that is not as convincing are the candle lights, not natural enough compared to the rest of the image, a bit of bloom/glare could have helped." - Lisa Della Dora

"This image conveys deep emotions. The color choice is reminiscent of photos of those who have passed away, giving the piece an eerie feeling." - Massimo Gnocchi

"I chose this work because it has transmitted me coziness, together with a good job of rendering. Moreover, the description fits perfectly with the render, and corresponds exactly to what I would have said if I had been asked to define the concept of home: "a sensation of peace and calm inside, while the storm is happening outside our bubble of safety”. I love the design choices and the colors used." - Curtissheeran

"Truly impressed with the whole set, the quality is impressive and the result is very natural and photographic. I would have appreciated a bit more of storytelling since the theme was "home", and this feels to me a bit impersonal. I think it would have helped to have details that could give the feeling of home and of the people who live there, rather than not very lived in place. Anyway, a very convincing exercise and result." - Lisa Della Dora

"As I look at this sketch, along with the very well written back story of this project, I realise that this, if executed just as good as the sketch and the back story, could have been a superior winner of this competition in my opinion. The background being described by the author hit me right where it should and even without a final image, just reading this small portion of text had quite a big emotional impact on me.

What I feel from this story is the sense of regret, which I’ve discovered is the only true fear I hold in my life. The tragic feeling of when we reflect back in time and think life was better back then, compared to now, but inevitable change leaves us only with a nostalgic memory that we may never relive.

According to this sketch, with the person sitting on a log, a backpack on its back signalling that he or she is on a journey through life and not experiencing any sense of real home. We can still see the house, his or her previous place of belonging, in the background, almost mocking him or her from the distance. It’s there, so close, but still so far away. And even if this person would move back to this house, things would never become what they were. That sense of belonging, the home, that time and place in life, is inevitably gone forever.

The composition is flawless, with the person sitting with its back facing the house, indicating that it’s something of the past, while facing the edge of the image, indicating that the future is unknown. We can’t see what lies in before him or her.

As is the back story. I really wish this image had been made and I really hope to see it finished some day. As a matter of fact, this is one of the few images or ideas I can look at and wish that I was the one who came up with it myself. I would have loved to create this image, as I can tie very strong emotional bonds to it.

And emotions are, truly, what artistry is all about." - Johannes Lindqvist

"A really soothing and quiet image, evocative of a very specific place and time. I appreciate especially the attention to details and composition. I think the backplate could have been integrated a bit more carefully, above all the stone wall outside, should be darker and less distracting. Overall great job, I think most of the time simplicity is the hardest thing to channel in an effective way." - Lisa Della Dora

"I value the design and the serene ambiance it creates. However, from a technical perspective, greater attention to detail would have enhanced the overall execution." - Massimo Gnocchi

The challenge

Home: a word that carries the weight of our past, present, and future. We could think about our birthplace. Or perhaps the place where we moved to became our home. We could think about a part of our culture that lies within us, or we might just dream about the life we would love to have.

In the CGMood 3D art challenge 2023, we are looking forward to seeing what the relationship with this word means to you.
