Not to Scale - Imaginary Cities of Jizō

"Not to Scale" is a series of 3D renderings modeled and rendered in Cinema 4D (Redshift). They illustrate my appreciation of the integration of men and nature in Japanese architecture through exploration of an imaginary city of "Jizo" (Buddha Statues).

Aged "Jizo" stone statues are often intentionally weathered and aged to be covered in moss and embedded in ground over time. They serve the primary role of protecting children while also serve as ornamental elements to blend and obscure the borders between nature and man-made structures in sacred shrines and temples.

As one who has long appreciated traditional Japanese Architecture, I have taken the COVID lock-down opportunity to create a series of 3D renderings in celebration of Jizo, for them being the smallest elements in physical scale yet encapsulate big and significant essence of Men and Nature (hence the title "Not to Scale").

My final renders - a day and a night scene.

In the day scene, the 2 children is a representation of Jizo's primary role - protecting children, travelers and lost souls.  They also serves as a symbol of transient humanity among nature.

In the night scene, the existence of stag deer - timid by nature - implies harmony.  Fireflies-Lit "Tōrō" stone lanterns personify transient inhabitants, while also symbolizing the obscured border between nature and architecture.

Closeup look-dev renders of some 3D assets I have been working on for the past week - involved a lot of experimentation with Quixel Megascans materials and using Cinema4D "hair" as moss.
